Mermaids
Wash Ashore In NYC
by Leslie Rosenberg
Part
Mardi Gras, part performance art, part low-rent costume
party, the annual Mermaid Parade took place this past
Saturday, June 24, in Coney Island, NY. Now in its 18th
year, the parade has become a cult tradition among the
city's funkiest residents, who turned out in droves to
strut their stuff in the summer sun.
Participants are encouraged to create their costumes on
the cheap and bribe the judges with cases of cold beer.
The parade also attracts vintage car owners from the surrounding
boroughs, who show off their award-winning hotrods. ATOMIC
editor Leslie Rosenberg caught all the action on film.
