With a sound as American as baseball and apple pie, LaVerne, Maxene and Patty—collectively known as the Andrews Sisters—became the leading female entertainers of the war years. Large doses of the new sound known as swing, combined with their fresh faces and exhilarating performances, turned them into a sensation. This led to an illustrious career boasting more than 90 million record sales and the recording of roughly 1800 songs. Their seminal hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" catapulted the Andrews Sisters from the position of popular singers to that of superstars. The Andrews Sisters were a phenomenon in their time, one that was met with a fervor similar to that which rock and roll later received. Queens of the jukebox and radio, the Andrews Sisters' spirit of optimism and creative, uplifting harmonies helped this country through a very dark time.

Originally the brainchild of Army Captain Bob Vincent as a means to boost morale of American troops during World War II, the story of the V-Disc program is a fascinating one. On a monthly basis, upwards of a quarter of a million vinyl records were shipped directly to our servicemen where they played in mess halls, barracks and even right on the front lines. For the musicians, who were in the midst of the musician’s union strike, the program provided them a welcome opportunity to record again, which they gladly did free of charge.
