Linda & The Big King Jive Daddies
Linda & The Big King Jive Daddies

Is Swing an American exclusive? Hardly. The neo-swing movement is still growing in Europe, Australia and now even in Japan. The self-titled debut CD from Osaka-based Linda & the Big King Jive Daddies on Slimstyle Records announces Asia's new-found love of big band and jump blues.

Linda and a few of these Daddies had been doing rockabilly until they came to New York and happened to catch a swing gig while out on the town. Upon returning to Japan they put together the present Big King Jive Daddies and cut their first CD. Loaded as it is with 11 fairly common neo-swing standards—including "Route 66," "Caldonia" and the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" of the swing world, "Jump Jive & Wail"—you might not expect this album to be much different than the hundreds of other neo-swing CDs released in every major city. But what sets Linda & the Big King Jive Daddies apart is that they are not afraid to sing in their native tongue! Linda sometimes muddles the English lyrics while ripping through a fast song. But she makes up for it by singing some of the verses entirely in Japanese.

The song selections appear to have been mainly inspired by the recent recordings of Brian Setzer, Eddie Reed and the Big Kahuna. However the combo does offer some often overlooked songs from the late 1950s and early '60s, including "I Want You To Be My Baby," "Johnny Jingo," "Tweedle Dee" and the Isley Brothers' "Shout." Linda & the Big King Jive Daddies are a fun trip on the tour of swing around the world. Don't miss the boat.
