The
Stingrays Surf Band
Don't Fear the Reverb
I
never thought I would dig surf music. The rapid guitar riffs
and rhythmic instrumentals held little appeal for methat
is until I heard The Stingrays Surf Band's debut album, Don't
Fear the Reverb (SlimStyle). Comprised of three 17-year-olds
from San Clemente, California, The Stingrays conjure up the
great days of early Sixties surf music in the fashion of The
Ventures and Dick Dale.
The
album opens with the title track, which even slips in a playful
bar of Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper." Driving rhythms
continue with "Los Mosquitos," "Sunnyside Up," and "Hawaiian
Pull Out." Adding an exotic flair, "La Chancha," is an airy
Chicano tune that incorporates the sounds of a Latin trumpet.
With
13 instrumental tracksonly two of which are coversDon't
Fear the Reverb delivers rocking riffs and driving melodies
that make for the perfect California soundtrack. With a resurgence
of Sixties surf-a-go-go, The Stingrays Surf Band has raised
the bar in musicianship. One listen to this amazing trio will
make you want to grab your longboard and ride the waves.
