Bim Bam Baby
Who Am I Gonna Love Tonight

In the liner notes for their debut CD, the members of Bim Bam Baby thank Louis Prima and Keely Smith for inspiration. Perhaps the band should have given props to Frankie and Annette as well. Although they market themselves as a swing combo, Bim Bam Baby covers a range of retro styles, from sultry lounge to "beach blanket bingo."

Who Am I Gonna Love Tonight? is a fun mélange of retro musicality that spans several decases. Unfortunately, given the low-budget production quality, what could have been a truly excellent debut is merely ordinary (abeit highly entertaining). The first track, "Tonight I'm Gonna Love You," is uninspired, but Prima/Smith fans will relish the smooth, swingy sound of "Love Roller Coaster" and "Baby Won't you Please Come Home." Songs like "Bring It Home To Me" and "I Gotta Have your Love" have a jazzier tempo, while "Come Back My Love" and "Them there Eyes" are straight off the jukebox at your local soda shop. Ear candy at its best.

If you're looking for innovative new music that pushes the envelope for the swing movement, you won't find it here. the album is almost entirely covers, and the cord progressions are pretty standard twelve-bar blues and I-VI-IV-V. The voacls aren't as strong as they could be—some of the harmonies are off—and on songs like "High Blood Pressure," a backup vpcalist is sorely needed to make the song jump during the call and response. Still, the ultra-kitschy "High Blood Pressure" is my favorite track, taking you back to the days of clean cut kids twisting on the beach.

Bim Bam Baby's Who Am I Gonna Love Tonight? is a good first effort from a band that is still very green. Take it along on your next trip to the shore.
