Got Swing?
Volume 1

How many so-called “neo-swing” compilations have you come across over the last year? Odds are quite a few if you’ve been flipping through the bins at some of the majors. But few are as solid as Got Swing?, the new release compiled by Dan “DJ Mez” Mezrich for Wanna Dance Productions. One listen, and it’s obvious that Mezrich knows good dance music. Some of the songs are a little dated for a new compilation, going as far back as a cut from Bill Elliott’s 1994 Swing Fever album,

J Street Jumpers: Is You Is Or Is You Ain't
Casey MacGill and the Spirits of Rhythm: Whattya Want?

but Dan picks out the best of the best for us, keeping “dated” from being synonymous with “stale.” The true gems on this comp are The J Street Jumpers’ sultry rendition of “Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby” and Casey MacGill’s “Whaddya Want.” (The J Street Jumpers are a fairly obscure but incredibly talented outfit rarely heard outside of the DC area, and Casey MacGill is the new sensation from the Pacific Northwest as well as the man behind the band in the new Broadway show Swing!) Aside from these tunes, you probably won’t come across anything you haven’t heard in the last couple of years on Got Swing, but if the “Volume I” stamped on the cover is any indication, you can count on more high-quality hand-picked goodness from the crew at Wanna Dance. Anyone looking specifically for a CD to press “play” and walk away from, spending the next hour on the dance floor, should check this one out.
